Hot Foiling for a Whimsy Birthday Card

It’s my niece’s birthday and I’ve got a fun card planned for her. A simplistic design turns fun with some great accents.

Supplies

Neenah Classic Crest Solar White 110lb cardstock for card base, 80lb cardstock for stamping

Gina K Cardstock in Plum Punch and Sea Glass

Spellbinders All Occasion Pennants hot foiling plates (August 2019 Glimmer Club) and hot foil

Glimmer Hot Foil Machine and Spellbinders Platinum 6 Die Cutting Machine

Simon Says Stamp Woodland Whimsy Stamp set and Gina K Amalgam Ink in black

Copic Markers in R81, C1, C3, C5

Gina K Connect Glue & Mini Foam Adhesive Squares

Nuvo Crystal Drops in Caribbean Ocean and Violet Galaxy, Nuvo Glitter Drops in Silver Moondust

Hot Foiling

The Glimmer Hot Foil machine uses heat and specialized plates to apply foil to projects. Used in conjunction with a die cut machine, the pressure along with heat gives a look similar to letter press. Specialized foil is required, so any deco foil will not work for this process.

A pair of pennant hot plates from a Spellbinders Kit of the Month club, along with fun silver foil, are perfect for today’s card. After preheating a Glimmer Hot Foil machine, create a hot foil sandwich and set the timer. When ready, run the Glimmer platform and sandwich through an approved die cutting machine.

I’ve used my Glimmer Hot Plate with both a Sizzix Big Shot machine and Spellbinders Platinum 6. Both machines gave great results.

Quick Tip!

If over-foiling occurs, just try again. Try to ensure your plates do not overheat. For my second try on the BDay pennant, I had great results. A bit of brushing with a dry paintbrush helps remove any light bits of foil.

Use attached dies to die cut pennants and pole.

Stamping & Coloring

Using Gina K Amalgam Ink, stamp images onto cardstock. Dry thoroughly (I used my Ranger Heat tool to speed this process up).

Color with Copic markers, or any other color medium you prefer.

Fussy cut or use available dies to create a die cut.

Finishing

Arrange pennants, and bunny to fit on card panel. Use liquid glue for the bunny, and adhesive foam squares for pennants.

Apply dots of Nuvo Drops throughout card to accent.

I love the simplicity of this card design. The Nuvo Drops tie in all the colors, while the shine from the foiled pennants creates interest. The bunny keeps the card whimsical, perfect for my niece!
