Distress Oxides and Stencils

Distress Oxides are great for blending and other techniques and using them along with stencils is no exception! Today, I have two great cards, both created using Distress Oxide inks.

Card 1

For the first card, I used mini ink daubers and Gina K Design’s Sun Spot stencil. After adding various colors of ink (Seedless Preserves, Salty Ocean, Mowed Lawn, Squeezed Lemonade and Picked Raspberry) into different circles I let the panel dry completely.

Next, I trimmed the panel to 5” x 3 3/4” and a secondary panel of yellow cardstock to 5 1/4” x 4”. I glued the panels together before adhering them to an A2 card base cut from Neenah Classic Crest 120lb cardstock.

This matting allowed for a 1/8” boarder on all sides between both panels and the card base.

Using Honey Bee Stamp’s Thinking of You dies, I cut three sets of the sentiment from Neenah Solar White 80lb cardstock. Multiple sets allows you to glue the layers together and have a more dimensional sentiment. I cut one phrase outline from Grafix Vellum in clear.

After stacking and gluing all sentiment pieces, I adhered them to the vellum. Adding glue to the back of the vellum, directly behind placed sentiment only, prevents dried glue from being visible once sentiment stacks are adhered to cards. As a result, your cards will have a cleaner look to them.

A couple drops of Nuvo Crystal Drops in Simply White for the tittles (dots for the ‘i’s) completes this card.

The color variation in the dots is great. Vellum helps frame the sentiment, allowing it to showcase above the brightness of the background.

Card 2

The showcase panel for this card was created utilizing Concord & 9th’s Faceted Turnabout Stencil and Distress Oxide Sprays. After adhering a card panel (Neenah Solar White 80lb cardstock) to my Wendy Vecchi Make Art Stay-tion, I placed the faceted stencil on top and lightly spritzed with Squeezed Lemonade.

I gently lifted the stencil and dried the panel completely with a heat tool. After thoroughly cleaning and drying the stencil, I oriented the stencil at a 90 degree angle from the first placement and spritzed with Twisted Citron.

Next, I repeated the steps above with Picked Raspberry, then Sheer Shimmer Spray. The panel was then allowed to dry completely.

I die cut the panel into two rectangles using My Favorite Things’ Stitched Rectangles. I cut a third panel from matching green cardstock.

Finally, using Distress Oxide ink in Picked Raspberry, I stamped a sentiment from KaiserCraft Birthday Wishes. I glued all panels onto an A2 card base cut from Neenah Classic Crest 120lb cardstock and this simple card was complete.

The use of the faceted stencil brings a fun whimsy to the card, while the stitched rectangles keep the pattern from overpowering the card. The simple sentiment ties everything together.

Distress Oxides are fun to work with, whether they are in ink pad or spray form while stencils add a whole new interest level. Hope you have fun trying these techniques out!
